new this midday, the state of iowa has received 97 million dollars to improve water quality and prepare for floods. governor terry branstad, the city of dubuque, and state officials are meeting today to discuss the federal grant. iowa is one of 13 states and cities to receive funds from the... u-s department of housing and urban development. the grant will lead efforts to accelerate flood reduction and water quality around iowa's watersheds. contaminated water in flint, michigan forced an environmental protection agency official to resign. regional administrator, susan hedman, will step down next month. hedman's announcement comes after governor rick snyder released several pages of emails. the documents show state officials initially tried to pass the blame onto city and county leaders. a proposed oil pipeline from north dakota to illinois will lead future meetings for the iowa utilities board. dakota access wants to build the bakken pipeline that would carry thousands of barrels of crude through iowa. about 40

to switch to privatization. but, the centers for medicare and medicaid services or c-m-s extended the deadline by sixty days for a smoother transition. loebsack believes rushing the process could create problems for iowa's vunerable populations. iowa congressman rod blum is in cedar rapids today for the congressiona l app challenge award ceremony. blum met with small businesses in other parts of eastern iowa yesterday. the first district republican stopped at farmtek in dyersville to talk about how it can benefit from online sales. he also met with employees to hear about what issues that congress can help with. "wages have been flat to stagnant, to down over the last 20 years. so we need to get people's wages moving up in the right direction and it's small businesses that are a big part of that solution. that's why i like to familiarize myself with what t they're doing." blum also stopped in manchester, where he toured x-l specialized and talked about the need for skilled welders and

the iowa department of education is recognizing four iowa schools for their work to eliminate the achievement gap. state officials presented the breaking barriers award to.. washington high school for its work with african american students. riverdale heights elementary school was recognized for a second year in a row for helping latino students. denison elementary school got the award for its work with students whose first language is not english. and the state is awarding west union elementary school for its work with students who come from low-income families. 52 percent of west union elementary students qualify for free and reduced lunches. but 93 percent of students are proficient in reading and math. that's above the state average of 68 percent. administrators say a tiered system to identify students who need more help is a big part of that success. about five percent of students spend one- on-one time with an interventionist. 11:18:40 "students who may be struggling with reading or math

whalen shows us how chain and non-chain restaurants compare in calorie counts. americans love to eat out. many chain restaurants are posting the calorie counts on their menus, before it becomes a federal law this year. but if you think that eating at a non-chain is healthier... that may not always be the case. researchers sampled dishes in restaurants in boston, san francisco and little rock. they found that the meals at independent eateries were just as calorie-laden as chain restaurants. however, you might not know that because the calories aren't always on the menu. according to their research, the average dinner at a non-chain restaurant had about 12- hundred calories. while that may be comparable to a chain restaurant, it's still about half the recommended amount of calories for an adult. the worst offenders, american, italian and chinese restaurants tended to pile on the calories... while greek, vietnamese and mexican tended to have the least amount. the study's authors recommend eating in moderation, and making healthy choices like

a call for more nurses.... the hospital says it has a growing demand for the profession. and they're not alone. hospitals around the country are facing a major nursing shortage and schools can't meet demand. according to the bureau of labor statistics' employment projections for 2012-2022, an rn is one of the top jobs in the country in terms of growth. the rn workforce is expected to grow 19 percent. that's from 2 point 71 million jobs in 2012 to 3 point 24 million in 2022. the bureau also projects the need for 525 thousand replacement nurses in the workforce. that means the total number of job openings for nurses is more than a million by 2022. kcrg-tv9's forrest saunders found out how mercy is trying to increase their workforce. morgan henkel has been a nurse for about a year and a half.morgan got into the business

"i just really like helping people. i've always been the type to put people before myself. friends or anybody, really."in coming years, she won't be short of people to care for as demand for her profession continues to increase due to the shortage. the american association of colleges of nursing points to a number of causes. three of the biggest: -limited nursing faculty at schools, meaning not enough nurses are being produced -on top of that, many nurses are nearing retirement age -plus, profession because they're over worked. " secretary kerry also addressed the refugee crisis in europe. kerry says the u-s will encourage donors to increase humanitarian funding by 30 percent- equaling 13 billion dollars a year. u-s home sales are rebounding and breaking records. the growing trend is so significant, that home values are increasing at double the pace of american's wages. u-s home sales rebounded in december, after federal regulations delayed purchases in november. in 2015, americans bought nearly 5-point-3 million homes-that's a 6-point-five increase from a year ago. the country hasn't seen total sales likes this since nine years ago. gas prices in iowa are in down 10 cents a gallon from last month, and that's helping businesses. gas prices are dropping primarily because of an oversupply of crude oil. a long period of high oil prices led to more production as drillers found new places to look for oil. the u-s also improved oil drilling technologies, and that helped add even more

lifting sanctions against iran will put even more oil in the market. cedar rapids owns 685 vehicles and more than 500 pieces of power equipment that use gasoline or diesel fuel. from july 1st through december, the city saved 634-thousand dollars compared to the year before. pierson's flower shop has a couple of delivery vans that make about 50 deliveries a day. right now, the business is saving 750 to 1000 dollars a month because of low gas prices. "after seeing those 3.50 gas prices, yes those bills are a lot easier to pay at the end of the month " the transportatio n department at college community expects the diesel fuel bills to be 120-thousand dollars under budget. when it comes to budgeting, the city looks at the average costs in past years as well as forecasts from the federal department of energy. linn county supervisors and other elected officials could get raises this

linn county's compensation board is recommending a 3 point 5 percent increase in pay for the county attorney and sheriff. it's recommending a 3 percent increase for like the auditor, recorder and treasurer. last year, linn county supervisors approved a 2 percent increase on a 3 to 2 vote that put their yearly wage over the 100- thousand dollar mark. in black hawk county, elected officials are getting a 4 percent increase in their salaries. according to the waterloo cedar falls courier, the board of supervisors approved a move to raise wages earlier this week. the county attorney will earn nearly 5 thousand more dollars and the sheriff 4 thousand more dollars this year. the supervisors themselves are getting about a 14-hundred dollar increase. going against or with the movement? hollywood stars debate going to the oscars... and ending a painful relationship. a famous 70's singer tweets about breaking up with his wife! and a judge has good news for bill cosby. we'll tell you his fate in a

back to our top stories this midday. the state of iowa has received a 97 million dollar grant to help control water quality and flooding. the federal grant comes from the u-s department of housing and urban development. today, governor branstad and state officials will meet to discuss the grant. the iowa utilities boards will host four meetings next month about the bakken oil pipeline. the proposed project would send oil from north dakota, through iowa, to illinois. dakota access wants to build the pipeline that would carry thousands of barrels of crude each day through iowa. the other states have already approved the project. officials say all 12 missing marines who crashed off the coast of hawaii are now considered dead. the crash happened during a training session, after two marine helicopters collided near the coast of oahu. the marine corps says their five-day search failed
